Learning English Through Song
Learning English through song is increasingly becoming more and more popular as technology advances and makes it more accessible. There are tons of resources online that are free and fun! If you want to accelerate your child’s English speaking abilities – using music is a great way to do it!
There is significant evidence that shows how music helps ESL students to not only learn, but also to retain English skills. Also, the language used in songs typically uses practical and casual phrases that are useful for everyday life and spoken in the way of a native speaker, versus formal language that isn’t colloquial. Listening to English songs can also help with correct pronunciation and intonation. Not to mention how catchy songs can be, so don’t be surprised if your child is singing to the tune of “If You’re Happy and You know it” all day!
There are many ways you can use music and song at home to help improve your child’s English skills. First, sing together! Act out the movements with your child or use props! Second, talk about what is happening during the video and don’t be afraid to hit pause in the middle and ask what’s coming up next! Third, try to turn everyday phrases into songs. Bath time, clean up time and trips to the store or school can quickly become a sing along!
So there you have it! Music is not only good for the soul, but also good for learning a second language. So keep on singing and keep on learning!
